Ways To Play
Palimpsest has a variety of plots, themes, and NPCs. It can be challenging to create a character that aligns with the themes and plots that interest you.
The following aims to help players in creating characters that fit their interests. This list is by no means exhaustive and aims to serve as inspiration rather than a set of instructions.
Fame-Hunting
Do you seek to become a Legend? How are you planning on getting there?
You could…
- Take the Signature Skill Character Quirk in an ability that might be likely to attract notice.
- Take the Fatal Flaw or Secret Character Quirk to add some risk to your character's bid for fame, if they're making one.
- Establish a connection (whether in backstory or in-game) with Cirrhata Day or Magister Shaqan Flavius Quinctilius.
- Consider the experiences which have shaped your character's desire (or lack of desire) for fame.
- Approach Fame in Uptime.
Ways of Telling
How do you engage with Telling? How does it enrich your experience? Alternatively, what could you achieve with it?
You could…
- Take the Signature Skill Character Quirk in a particular craft or practise of Telling.
- Take the Helpful Heirloom Character Quirk, and choose an object which embodies or relates to a particular way of Telling.
- Establish a connection (whether in backstory or in-game) with Gwenllian or Cirrhata Day.
- Consider how your character’s culture(s) have influenced the ways in which they engage with Telling.
Telling, Agency, and Identity
How does Telling affect how you see yourself? How does it affect how others see you?
You could…
- Take the Mutability Playstyle Quirk.
- Establish a connection (whether in backstory or in-game) with Cirrhata Day, Magister Gaia, Iris, Magister Shaqan Flavius Quinctilius, Bulaan Dula, or Stalwart 'Firebeard' of the Coal Shafts.
- Consider the stories, ideas, and experiences that have shaped your character’s sense of identity. How conscious are they of these influences? Where would they be without them?
Death and Legends
What makes a Legend? When, if ever, does a Legend truly die?
You could…
- Take the Mortality Playstyle Quirk.
- Establish a connection (whether in backstory or in-game) with Stalwart 'Firebeard' of the Coal Shafts.
- Think about your character’s conception of death. How far do they believe someone can live on in memory?
- Consider your character’s attitude towards Legends. Do they revere them, or pay them no heed?
Inter- and Intra-regional Politics
How do the politics around you affect you? Do you seek change, or to uphold the status quo?
You could…
- Take the Reputation Character Quirk with a particular area or group.
- Take the Favour Character Quirk with someone of political influence.
- Establish a connection (whether in backstory or in-game) with Gwenllian, Magister Gaia, Iris, Magister Shaqan Flavius Quinctilius, Bulaan Dula, or Stalwart 'Firebeard' of the Coal Shafts.
- Think about where your character falls with regards to the underlying tensions and conflicts of the region[s] they live in. Do they have deeply held beliefs regarding politics, or do they try to ignore them? Why?
Cultural Curiosity
Do you have a passion for exploration? Do you seek to learn more about the world and its peoples?
You could…
- Take the Relationship Character Quirk with a character from a different culture to your character.
- Establish a connection (whether in backstory or in-game) with Cirrhata Day.
- Consider whether your character has been exposed to a diversity of cultures or not. Are they a frequent traveller, or have they spent the majority of their life in one place?
